Feral Dory

  • About the Artist—Dorea Martin

    Dory never considered herself an artist. She had friends that would paint and draw, but she was always the left-brained analytical one, the gal that fixed things and cars, the person that liked to know the what, why, and how of everything.

    Through the desire to know the what, why, and how of nature, Dory became an environmental educator and park ranger, instilling in young people the same fascination she has of the natural world. She doubled-down on her analytical and logical identity, loving how science helped her understand and explain the world.

    The first time she saw a chainsaw carving, she thought…HOW? How can one create such beauty and detail with such a blunt, destructive tool? The internet provided the answers—including tutorial videos on how to do it herself. It was logical—just follow step-by-step and voila, make a bear!

    Nope. Those first bears in 2018 were… wonky. But the next set was a lot better and she was proud of them! Then life happened and the saw started to collect dust.

    Flash forward to 2022—she’s living in Washington with yard again. She takes a class on carving and re-awakens the artist inside her. She keeps carving—takes a 7 month break to hike 2,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail—and then keeps carving some more.

    In 2024, Dory will hike her last 600ish miles to complete the Pacific Crest Trail. And then she will come back to carve some more! She is only beginning to feel comfortable calling herself an “artist.”

    “My favorite part of carving is making the eyes—you can’t really see a carving’s personality until it has eyes—then suddenly transforms from a piece of wood into a happy and joyful bear, or a serious owl, or a curious baby bear, or a hopeful raccoon. I never know who I’m going to meet until they open their eyes.”
